It’s hard to believe that summer is winding down and it’s already back-to-school time for students. As you get your children geared back up for another year of classes—between getting those school supplies and fall clothes lined up—make sure that you are also talking to them about important back-to-school safety issues, particularly those related to the commute to school.

Does your child walk or ride their bicycle to school? If so, check to see if your community is involved in the “Safe Routes to Schools” program. These community-driven initiatives help to make sure that the routes kids take to their schools are safe through education initiatives, adult supervision, improved signage, and better traffic infrastructure. Regardless of whether your community is participating, talk to your children about how to handle the safety issues that might come up on their way to school.

Is your child taking advantage of school transportation? School buses are one of the safest forms of transportation for young children, but it’s still necessary to talk to your kids about school bus safety. Bus-related accidents tend to happen at the boarding point. Make sure you talk to your children about where to stand to wait for the bus, how to safely board or get off the bus, and good behavior on the bus.

To help guide you in these conversations with your student, the National Safety Council has put together a short brochure of school transportation safety tips to share with your children.
